Do I Need a Lift Kit for Bigger Golf Cart Tires?

Short answer: a stock golf cart clears a tire up to about 20 inches tall. Anything bigger needs a lift kit, and the lift height decides the tire height: roughly a 3 to 4 inch lift for 22 inch tires and a 6 inch lift for 23 inch and up. The right lift depends on where you drive, pasture or pavement, more than on the look.

Why the tire size sets the lift

On a stock cart the tire lives close to the body and the fender. A taller tire rubs on turns and over bumps, and a wider one hits the frame. A lift kit moves the body up and away from the tire so a bigger one fits. The two are chosen together.

Picking the lift for how you use it

Street and neighborhood. A modest lift and a street tire. The cart sits a little taller, rides fine on pavement, and still fits in the garage.

Lake roads and gravel. A mid lift with an all-terrain tire. Enough clearance for ruts and the boat ramp, still comfortable on the road.

Pasture and hunting. A taller lift with an aggressive tire. This is the cart that goes across the fence line and through the mud. It also needs the rest of the cart set up for it.

A lift raises the center of gravity and changes the angles the steering and suspension were designed around. A lift bolted on without the rest done wanders, wears tires on the edges, and feels tippy on a crowned county road. A lift set up right, with the steering realigned and the right tires, still steers and stops the way it should. That setup is the part of the job most people do not see and most people notice.
