Gas vs Electric Golf Cart: Which Is Easier to Maintain?
Short answer: an electric golf cart is easier and cheaper to maintain day to day, with one big cost, the battery pack, every few years. A gas cart has steady small jobs, oil, filters, belts and plugs, but handles sitting for months far better. Which one is easier depends on how you use the cart.
Electric carts
What they need. Batteries charged after every use, lead-acid cells watered in summer, terminals kept clean, and a load test once a year. Brakes, tires and suspension like any cart.
What goes wrong. The pack. Nearly every electric cart that comes to the shop with a "no power" or "no range" complaint has a battery, cable or charger problem. The motor and controller are reliable and rarely the cause.
What they hate. Sitting. A lead-acid pack that sits half-charged through a winter loses capacity it does not get back. If you use the cart on holiday weekends only, keep it on a charger that maintains, or think about lithium, which does not mind sitting.
Gas carts
What they need. Oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug and a drive belt check, about once a year or every 100 to 200 hours. Plus the chassis items every cart has.
What goes wrong. Fuel that sat too long, a clogged filter, a worn belt, a clutch that needs cleaning, and the starter battery. Most of it is small and most of it is caught at a yearly service.
What they hate. Old fuel. A gas cart that sits all winter with a half tank of untreated fuel is the gas cart that will not start in March.
