Golf Cart Forward/Reverse Switch Problems

Short answer: Golf cart forward/reverse switch problems are almost always one of three things: burned contacts inside the switch, a loose or corroded wire connection, or a worn switch that has seen too many cycles. If the cart only moves one direction, or works sometimes and not others, the switch and its wiring need to be tested before anything else gets replaced.
Works In One Direction Only
If the cart will only go forward, or only go reverse, the problem is usually inside the switch itself. These switches use a sliding contact to send power down two different sets of wires depending on position. When one side's contacts wear out or burn, that direction stops getting power even though the lever or switch moves fine.
This can feel like a motor or controller problem because the symptom shows up when you try to drive. But in most cases the motor is fine. The switch simply is not completing the circuit for that direction anymore.
Intermittent Problems
Intermittent forward/reverse issues are harder to chase down because the cart might work fine for a week, then fail to shift, then work again. Common causes include:
- A connector that is loose and only makes contact at certain angles
- Corrosion building up slowly on a terminal
- A switch with worn contacts that make intermittent connection instead of a clean one
- Vibration from rough terrain working a wire loose over time
Intermittent electrical problems rarely fix themselves. They get worse as corrosion spreads or contacts wear further.
Burned Contacts
Forward/reverse switches carry real current, and over time the contact points inside can pit, blacken, or build up a thin burned film. This happens faster on carts that get driven hard, used commercially, or shifted directions often without fully stopping.
Burned contacts show up as:
- A direction that works only if you wiggle the switch
- A faint burning smell near the dash or switch housing
- Visible black or gray discoloration on the contact points when the switch is opened
- Weak or hesitant movement right when you shift direction
Once contacts are burned, cleaning sometimes helps for a short while, but the fix that lasts is usually a replacement switch.
Wiring Issues
The switch does not work alone. It depends on wiring running back to the controller, solenoid, and battery pack. A problem anywhere in that path can mimic a bad switch:
- Loose connector at the switch itself
- Corroded terminal where a wire meets a lug, especially near the battery compartment
- A chafed wire rubbing against the frame, cutting in and out
- A bad ground connection affecting one circuit more than the other
Working on wiring under load, or near battery terminals, carries real risk of sparking or shock. If you are not comfortable tracing wires near the battery pack or controller, have it checked rather than probing it yourself.
What Gets Tested
A proper diagnosis does not start with replacing the switch. It starts with a few checks:
- Visual inspection of the switch housing for heat marks, melted plastic, or burned contacts
- Continuity test on the switch itself in both forward and reverse positions
- Voltage check at the switch connector to confirm power is arriving correctly
- Inspection of wiring harness for chafe points, loose pins, or corrosion
- Test of the controller's response once good signal is confirmed from the switch
This order matters. Replacing a switch when the real problem is a corroded wire just leaves you with the same complaint and a new part that did not need replacing.

Questions
Straight answers
Can I drive the cart if it only works in reverse?
You can move it short distances to load it, but do not use it for regular driving until the switch is checked, since full failure can leave you stuck.
Will a bad switch damage the controller?
A worn switch rarely damages the controller by itself, but arcing contacts can send bad signals that cause other electrical faults over time.
How much does a forward/reverse switch cost to fix?
Cost depends on whether the switch just needs cleaning, a new switch, or wiring repair, so it is best to have it diagnosed first.
