Light Bars and Underglow on a Golf Cart

Short answer: Yes, you can add a light bar and underglow to a golf cart, and done right it will not hurt your battery pack. The key is a proper fused circuit, a dedicated switch, and wire that is sized for the load and run cleanly instead of taped along the frame. Skip those steps and you end up with a dead pack, a melted connector, or a fire risk.

Wiring done properly

A light bar and underglow kit both run off low voltage DC, but that does not mean you can just splice into whatever wire is closest. Each circuit needs its own fuse sized to the draw of the lights, a relay if the load is higher than a switch alone should carry, and wire gauge that matches the current and the length of the run. Longer runs need thicker wire or you lose voltage and the lights dim.

Route wire along the frame rails, inside existing channels where possible, and away from anything that moves, heats up, or holds water. Connections should be crimped or soldered and then sealed, not just twisted together. On an electric cart, tap power after the main power source and through a fuse block, not straight off the battery terminals.

Switches and control

Give the light bar and the underglow separate switches. One switch for both means more current through one contact, and it means you cannot run one without the other. Mount switches somewhere you can reach from the seat, label them, and keep the switch panel wiring neat so you are not chasing a short through a tangle later.

Some owners want the underglow on a remote or app control. That is fine, but the remote receiver still needs its own fused feed and a solid ground. A wireless control box tucked loose under a seat with wires flopping around is asking for a short.

Power draw and not killing the pack

LED light bars and underglow kits do not draw much current compared to the motor, but they still pull from the same battery pack, and currently the biggest mistake we see is lights left on with the cart parked. A light bar and a full underglow kit running for hours with the cart off can pull a pack down enough to cause problems starting or charging it later.

A few habits keep this from happening:

  • Wire lights through a switch that is easy to see and easy to reach, so you remember to shut it off.
  • Avoid wiring accessory lights straight to a key-on circuit if you want them usable while parked, and instead use a marked switch you control by hand.
  • If you want automatic shutoff, a timer relay is a better fix than hoping someone remembers.
  • Have your battery and charging system checked if you notice slower starts after adding accessories.

Charging and battery work involves acid and current that can injure you if handled wrong, so if you are not comfortable testing or replacing cells, have a tech check it rather than guessing.

Clean install versus taped wires

Taped wiring is the most common issue we find on carts that come in with lighting problems. Electrical tape stretches, dries out in the sun, and lets wires rub against metal edges until the insulation wears through. That is how shorts and electrical fires start.

A clean install means:

  1. Wire loomed or sleeved, not just taped.
  2. Connections at a fuse block or junction, not loose splices under the seat.
  3. Wire secured with clips or zip ties at regular intervals so nothing swings or rubs.
  4. Grounds cleaned to bare metal and tightened, not just wrapped around a bolt.

It takes longer than running a wire and taping it down, but it is the difference between lights that work for the life of the cart and lights that fail or cause bigger problems within months.

Service around Lake Tawakoni

We handle light bar and underglow installs, along with the rest of the wiring, battery, and electrical work on golf carts, for owners around Quinlan, Greenville, Wills Point, and the Lake Tawakoni towns including West Tawakoni and Point. Whether it is a full custom lighting build or just cleaning up an existing install that was taped together, we can do the work in the shop or come to you with mobile service.

If your cart has lights that flicker, a pack that seems to drain faster than it used to, or you just want underglow and a light bar put in the right way from the start, call or text us at 903 458 2311. We are open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5.

Questions

Straight answers

Will a light bar and underglow drain my golf cart battery?

Not if they are wired with a fused, switched circuit and turned off when the cart is parked, but leaving them on overnight can pull a pack down.

Can I run light bars and underglow on both gas and electric carts?

Yes, though the power source is different, so the hookup method changes between the two.

Do I need a separate switch for underglow versus the light bar?

We recommend it, since running them off one switch makes troubleshooting harder and adds more load to a single circuit.
