Why Does My Golf Cart Lose Power Going Uphill?
Short answer: a golf cart loses power going uphill because the hill asks for the most current, and something in the chain cannot deliver it. Nine times out of ten that is a battery pack that sags under load or a corroded cable. The motor and controller come last on the list.
Why hills show the problem first
On flat ground a cart pulls a modest amount of current. On the grade up from the boat ramp at Lake Tawakoni, with two people and a cooler on board, it pulls several times that. A pack that is a little tired, or a cable end that is a little corroded, is fine on the flat and falls apart under that load. The hill is the load test.
The usual causes, cheapest first
Weak batteries. Voltage collapses under load, the controller cuts power to protect itself, and the cart crawls. This is the most common cause on carts more than a few years old.
Bad connections. One corroded battery terminal or a loose ground adds resistance. Resistance turns into heat and lost power exactly when you need it most.
Old or wrong charger. A charger that is not finishing the charge leaves the pack short every day, and you feel it on hills.
Tired motor or brushes. On older motors the brushes wear and the motor cannot pull the current it once did. Real, but less common than the first three.
Controller. Rare. It gets tested, not assumed.
Gas carts
A gas cart that bogs on hills is a different list: fuel delivery, a clogged air filter, a worn drive belt, or a clutch that is not shifting under load. Same idea, though. The hill is where a marginal part gives up.
Bigger tires and lift kits
More tire means more load on the motor and the pack. If you are adding a lift and tires, the cart has to be set up for it, and a pack that was already borderline will show it on the first grade. We fit lift kits and wheel packages and set the cart up so it still climbs.

Why is my golf cart fine on flat ground but weak on hills?
Hills pull the most current. A pack or a connection that is marginal holds up on the flat and sags the moment the load goes up.
Is it the motor or the batteries?
Usually the batteries or the cables. The motor is tested last, after the cheap causes are ruled out.
Will a lift kit or bigger tires make hills worse?
Bigger tires raise the load on the motor. A cart that was already marginal will show it on the first hill. It can be set up right, but it has to be set up.
