How Fast Can a Golf Cart Go, and Can I Make Mine Faster?
Short answer: most stock golf carts run about 12 to 15 miles per hour. Newer carts and low-speed vehicles can run closer to 25. A cart can be made faster, and around here plenty are, but a real speed upgrade is done to the whole cart, brakes and suspension included, not just to the part that makes it go.
What sets the speed on an electric cart
Three things: the controller, which decides how much current the motor gets; the motor itself, which has a top rpm it is wound for; and the pack voltage. A cart at 48 volts with a stock controller and stock motor runs stock speed. Changing any of those changes the speed, and changing them together is where the big gains are.
Controller. Many carts can be reprogrammed or fitted with a higher-amp controller. This is usually the first step.
Motor. A high-speed or high-torque motor changes what the cart does. Speed motors go faster; torque motors climb and pull better. You choose based on how you use the cart.
Tires. A taller tire covers more ground per turn of the motor, so the cart is a little faster and a little slower off the line.
What sets the speed on a gas cart
The governor limits engine rpm, the clutches decide how that rpm turns into wheel speed, and the engine has its own limit. Adjusting the governor, setting up the clutches, and a taller tire are the usual gas cart upgrades.
Why the rest of the cart matters
A cart that goes faster needs to stop and steer at that speed. Brakes on a 20-year-old Club Car were sized for 12 mph. Suspension that is fine on the golf course wanders at 20 mph on a county road. And a faster electric cart pulls more current, so a tired pack that was getting by will not any more. A speed upgrade done right covers all of that.
Where you drive it
How fast you are allowed to drive on a public road depends on where you are, and that is a question for your city or county, not for us. What we do is make sure the cart is safe at whatever speed it runs.
