How Long Do Golf Cart Batteries Last in Texas Heat?
Short answer: a lead-acid golf cart battery pack lasts about three to five years, and a lithium pack lasts considerably longer. East Texas heat pushes lead-acid toward the short end of that. Charging after every use and keeping the cells watered is what gets you the long end.
Lead-acid: three to five years
Most carts around Quinlan, Lone Oak and Greenville still run lead-acid packs, and a well kept one gives about four years. The two things that shorten that are heat and sitting partly charged.
Heat. Battery chemistry runs faster when it is hot. It also boils water out of the cells. A cart that lives under a carport is better off than one parked in the open, and a cart parked in the sun all August is aging its pack every single day.
Sitting half-charged. Lead-acid batteries want to be full. A pack that sits at half charge for a few weeks sulfates, and sulfate is permanent lost capacity. This is why the carts that only get used on holiday weekends often have the worst batteries.
Lithium: longer, and less to do
Lithium packs last a lot longer, need no watering, and do not mind sitting at partial charge. They cost more up front. Whether the switch is worth it depends on how much you use the cart and how long you plan to keep it, and that is a conversation we are glad to have at the shop.
How to get the most out of a pack
- Charge after every use, even a short one.
- Check water in lead-acid cells monthly in summer. Use distilled water and fill after charging, not before.
- Keep the tops of the batteries clean and the terminals tight.
- Park in shade whenever you can.
- If the cart is going to sit for a month, leave it on a charger that maintains, or charge it fully first.
When it is time
If the range has dropped, the charger runs all night, or the cases are bulging, the pack is telling you. We test the pack under load and each battery on its own before anything is replaced.
