How Do I Know If My Golf Cart Batteries Are Bad?
Short answer: the signs of bad golf cart batteries are a cart that does not go as far as it used to, a charger that runs much longer than it used to, a cart that slows down on hills, and battery cases that are bulged, cracked or wet. If you see two of those, get the pack tested before you buy anything.
The signs, in the order owners usually notice them
Range drops. The cart that used to do a full day at the lake now needs a charge by lunch. This is the first and clearest sign.
The charger runs and runs. A pack that used to finish in a few hours now takes all night, or the charger clicks off early because it cannot push the pack up.
Hills get slow. A weak pack sags under load. The cart is fine on flat ground and dies on the grade up from the boat ramp.
Cases look wrong. Bulging sides, cracks, or acid crust on the tops mean the batteries are physically failing. Do not wait on these.
Age. A lead-acid pack in East Texas heat is doing well to reach five years. If yours is older than that and showing any sign above, it is the batteries.
Why we test instead of guessing
A pack can show every symptom above and still have only one bad battery in it. One weak cell drags the whole set down. We test each battery on its own and the pack under load. We also check the charger, because a charger that has stopped finishing the charge looks exactly like a bad pack from the driver's seat.
What "under load" means
A meter on the terminals of a cart that is sitting still tells you almost nothing. A tired battery can hold a good number at rest and fall on its face the moment the motor pulls current. The load test puts real draw on the pack and watches what the voltage does. That is the number that matters.
Gas cart owners
A gas golf cart has one starter battery, and it fails the same way a truck battery does: slow crank, then no crank, usually on the first cold morning. We test those too.
