Why Won't My Golf Cart Charge?
Short answer: a golf cart that will not charge is usually one of three things: the pack has run so low the charger cannot see it and will not start, the charger itself has failed, or there is a bad connection at the charge port or a battery terminal. All three get checked before anybody buys a charger or a set of batteries.
The charger will not even turn on
Most automatic chargers look for a minimum voltage from the pack before they start. A cart that was left on until it quit, or that sat for a season, can be below that number. The charger sees nothing and stays off. The pack is not necessarily dead, it just needs to be brought up to the point where the charger will take over. That is a shop job, and it is a common one after summer.
The charger runs but the cart still has no range
Now it is either the charger not finishing the charge, or the pack not holding it. A charger that shuts off early every time leaves the pack short and you feel it as poor range. A pack with one bad battery takes the charge and cannot hold it. The two look the same from the driver's seat and get told apart with a meter and a load test.
The charger clicks off right away or shows a fault light
Usually a connection. Corrosion at the charge port, a loose terminal, or a damaged cable end. Cheap to fix, and the most common cause of an "intermittent charging" complaint.
The order we check things
- Pack voltage at the terminals and at the charge port. If the two disagree, it is a connection.
- Charger output tested on a known good pack.
- Each battery checked on its own for the one that is dragging the pack down.
- Charge port, cables and terminals cleaned and tightened.
Gas carts
A gas cart has a starter battery and a small charging system on the engine. If the battery keeps going flat, the battery or that charging circuit gets tested. Same idea, smaller scale.

Why does my golf cart charger not turn on?

How do I know if it is the charger or the batteries?
The charger gets tested on a known good pack, and the pack gets checked at the port and at the terminals. That tells you in a few minutes which side has the fault.
Can a bad charger ruin golf cart batteries?
Yes. A charger that overcharges boils lead-acid cells, and one that undercharges leaves the pack short every day. Both shorten the life of the pack.
