Golf Cart Run/Tow Switch: What It Does

Short answer: The run/tow switch disconnects the motor from the drive system so the cart rolls freely instead of fighting the motor. You flip it to tow when you need to push the cart by hand, load it on a trailer, or work on the battery pack without the motor engaging. Left in tow by accident, the cart will crank or hum but refuse to drive.

What the switch actually does

On most electric golf carts, the run/tow switch sits between the batteries and the motor controller. In run mode, power flows normally and the motor responds to the accelerator. In tow mode, that connection is broken. The motor is no longer part of the circuit, so the wheels can turn without any resistance from the drive system.

This matters because electric motors create drag when they are not powered. Try to push a cart in run mode and you are fighting that drag the whole way. Flip the switch to tow and the cart rolls like any other wheeled cart, no fighting involved.

Where to find it

Placement varies by brand and model year, but the switch is usually:

  • Mounted near the controller, often under the seat or in the battery compartment
  • Marked with a toggle or lever, sometimes labeled "Run" and "Tow" in plain text
  • Colored yellow or red on many models so it stands out from other wiring

If you cannot find it by looking, your owner's manual will show the exact location for your make and model. We run into Club Car, E-Z-GO, Yamaha, ICON, and Advanced EV carts regularly, and the switch location differs enough between them that guessing is not worth the time.

When to use tow mode

Tow mode has a short list of real uses:

  1. Pushing or pulling the cart by hand, such as moving it in and out of a garage or trailer
  2. Towing it behind another vehicle or cart
  3. Working on the battery pack, cables, or charger connections without the motor live
  4. Diagnosing an electrical issue where you want the motor out of the circuit

Outside of those situations, the cart should stay in run mode. Tow mode is a maintenance and moving setting, not a driving setting.

Why it matters for battery work

Battery work means bare terminals, cables, and sometimes acid exposure. With the switch in run mode, a stray tool touching the wrong terminal can send power through the motor circuit unexpectedly. Switching to tow first removes that risk from the drive side of things. It will not make every part of the cart safe to touch, but it takes one variable out of the picture.

Any time you are working near battery terminals, cables, or a charger, treat the area as live until you have confirmed otherwise. Battery acid and unexpected current are not things to guess about. If you are not confident doing battery work yourself, have it checked by someone who does this regularly.

The most common no-go call

We get calls fairly often from people who say the cart "just won't go." The batteries test fine. The charger worked the night before. Nine times out of ten in these cases, someone bumped the switch into tow and forgot to flip it back, usually after loading the cart on a trailer or pushing it into a shed.

The fix takes a few seconds once you know where to look. But if you do not know the switch exists, you can spend a long time checking batteries, cables, and connections for a problem that is not there. Before you assume a dead motor or a bad battery pack, check the switch first.

Serving Quinlan and the Lake Tawakoni area

We are based in Quinlan, right on Lake Tawakoni, and we see this exact issue across the carts we service in Quinlan, Greenville, Terrell, and the Lake Tawakoni towns like West Tawakoni and Point. Lake communities move a lot of carts on and off trailers for weekend trips, which means a lot of switches get bumped.

If your cart won't move and you have already checked the run/tow switch, or if you just want someone to look at the battery system while it is apart, give us a call or send a text at 903 458 2311. We run mobile service or you can bring it into the shop, Monday through Saturday, 9 to 5.

Questions

Straight answers

Where is the run/tow switch on my golf cart?

On most electric carts it is mounted near the controller or under the seat, often with a yellow or red handle, and the owner's manual will show the exact spot for your model.

Can I drive my cart with the switch in tow?

No. In tow mode the motor is disconnected and on some carts the brakes work differently, so the cart should only be pushed or towed, not driven, in that position.

Why won't my cart move even though the battery is good?

A switch left in tow is one of the most common reasons a cart won't go, so check that switch before assuming it is a battery or motor problem.
